5 Don’ts for Bikers Traveling on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is one of the most popular holidays in the United States. It is also the busiest holiday for drivers, thousands of people will be traveling all over the country to visit family and loved ones. If you’re planning on driving this Thanksgiving season, follow our 5 don’ts on the road to prevent a motorcycle accident from ruining your holiday.

Don’t speed

Most highways will be packed during Thanksgiving, your normal route and even alternate routes will probably have more drivers on it than usual. If you’re driving and realize that you will be late to your Thanksgiving dinner, don’t speed or cut through traffic. Speeding is dangerous and can increase the chances of getting into a motorcycle accident. Your family and friends will understand and it’s better to be there late but safe than to never make it.

Don’t drink and drive

Drinking and driving should never be mixed, driving while intoxicated increases your chances of getting into a serious accident or being convicted of a DUI. Not only do your risk injuring yourself and others but a DUI could significantly affect your personal and professional life. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Thanksgiving is one of the deadliest holidays for drivers, from 2012 to 2016 there were 800 alcohol related fatalities. If you drink this Thanksgiving, order a taxi or Uber to take you back home, or ask a friend or family member for a ride, don’t risk losing your life during these festivities.

Don’t drive drowsy

Avoid traveling when you’re tired or drowsy. If you feel tired on the road pull over and rest or change your traveling plans so you can hit the road after you’ve had a good night’s rest. Driving late at night can also be dangerous, it is more difficult to see the road and traffic during nighttime. Try to travel during the daytime after you have had enough rest to prevent an accident.

Don’t get stuck in traffic

Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest times of the year on the roads, thousands of drivers will be traveling to meet with family and friends to celebrate. Your normal route may have heavier traffic than usual. Plan ahead and check Google Maps or a GPS navigation system before traveling to compare routes and choose the one that is fastest and more convenient. Not only will this save you time, but roads with less traffic are safer to travel on.

Don’t drive distracted

While you’re on the road, try to concentrate on the road and other drivers on it. Avoid answering calls from family or friends, looking at your phone or texting. Turn off your cellphone if necessary to avoid any distractions. Driving distracted can cause catastrophic accidents, 2019 data shows it was a factor in 8.5% of fatal motor vehicle crashes.

The holiday season is a time to celebrate and enjoy with loved ones, don’t turn yours into a tragedy. Avoid motorcycle accidents by following these simple safe Thanksgiving traveling tips. Be respectful with other drivers on the road, plan for heavy traffic and never drive while intoxicated. Enjoy the holiday season by being a responsible driver.
