According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the leading causes of death in the state (2020) include the following:
10. Influenza/Pneumonia
Influenza is a common virus more generally known as the flu. It has been listed as a common cause of Pneumonia which is an infection that causes inflammation of the air sacs in the lungs. influenza/pneumonia alone caused 494 deaths in Nevada.
9. Chronic Liver Disease/Cirrhosis
Chronic Liver Disease/Cirrhosis occurs when healthy tissue in the liver is replaced by scar tissue. One of the leading causes of the disease is alcohol abuse. This disease led to 559 deaths in the state of Nevada.
8. Suicide
Suicide is a serious issue that claims the lives of many across the nation each year. In the state of Nevada, it resulted in the deaths of 603 people.
7. Diabetes
Diabetes is a serious illness that disrupts the way your body processes food as it’s being turned into energy. Many people still live with this disease, but when it becomes serious it can be lethal. There were 904 cases of deaths as a result of diabetes.
6. Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s Disease is a form of dementia that has devastating effects on essential functions like memory and behavior. 943 people were reported dead in Nevada as a result of this disease.
5. Stroke
A stroke occurs when there are issues involving blood flow to the brain. There are a few variations of strokes, but the most common cases are ischemic strokes. Stroke-related fatalities claimed the lives of 1,444 people.
4. Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease
Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease was responsible for 1,648 deaths in Nevada. The most common cases associated with the disease would include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer.
3. Accidents
Accident-related deaths came out to amount to 1,761, this includes wrongful deaths as well. According to Koch & Brim, an injury law firm in Nevada, wrongful death is classified as a death caused by someone else’s careless or wrongful acts. This can vary from car accidents to accidental falls or even cases involving accidental poisoning.
2. Cancer
Cancer is a broad reference to a category of diseases that involve the growth of abnormal cells in the body. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in Nevada with 5,450 cases reported.

According to the CDC, the leading cause of death in the United States is heart disease. It refers to a group of heart conditions, but the most common is coronary artery disease which can cause heart attacks. Heart-related diseases were the leading cause of death in Nevada as well with a total of 7,285 cases reported.
